How to Care for Your Alpaca Wool Duvet
Keeping your alpaca duvet fresh, comfortable and naturally cared for
Your Devon Duvets Alpaca Wool Duvet has been individually handcrafted in our Devon workshop using beautiful natural alpaca fleece and premium percale cotton.
Alpaca is a wonderfully soft, breathable and naturally insulating fibre. It helps create a comfortable sleep environment without feeling heavy, and like wool, it benefits from gentle, regular care rather than frequent washing.
Looking after your alpaca duvet properly will help preserve its natural qualities and keep it feeling fresh, comfortable and beautifully suited to restful sleep.
Air your duvet regularly
The best way to care for your alpaca duvet is to air it regularly.
Natural fibres benefit from fresh air. Airing helps release moisture, freshen the fibres and keep your duvet feeling comfortable.
We recommend airing your duvet whenever you change your bed linen, or at least every few weeks.
On a dry day, you can hang your duvet outside for a short time, ideally in a shaded or lightly aired spot rather than strong direct sunlight. If the weather is damp or unsuitable, place it over a clothes airer, the top of a bedroom door, or the back of a chair near an open window, so that air can circulate around it.
Always make sure your duvet is completely dry before putting it back on the bed or storing it away.
Use a duvet cover
A removable duvet cover is the simplest way to protect your alpaca duvet from everyday marks, moisture and wear.
Wash your duvet cover regularly and allow the duvet itself to air while the cover is being laundered. This helps keep the duvet fresher for longer and reduces the need for cleaning.
Washing your alpaca duvet
Your alpaca duvet can be machine washed, but it must be washed with care.
Always use a 30°C wool cycle and make sure the washing machine is large enough for the duvet to move freely. If the machine is too small, the duvet may not wash or rinse properly and the filling may become compressed.
Use only a washing liquid specially designed for wool, such as Woolite or a similar wool detergent. Wool detergents are also suitable for alpaca. Do not use standard laundry detergent, biological detergent, fabric conditioner, bleach or harsh cleaning products.
Use a gentle spin to remove excess water, then remove the duvet from the machine as soon as the programme has finished. Do not leave it sitting damp in the drum.
After washing, gently reshape your duvet before drying.
Drying your alpaca duvet
Your alpaca duvet must be air dried.
You can dry it outside on a line in suitable weather, or indoors over a clothes airer in a warm, well-ventilated space.
Do not tumble dry your alpaca duvet. Tumble drying can shrink or felt alpaca fibres, and this damage cannot be reversed.
Do not place it directly on a radiator or use strong direct heat. Natural fibres need time, air and gentle handling.
Always make sure your duvet is completely dry before putting it back on the bed or storing it away.
What to do
To help keep your alpaca duvet at its best:

- Remove the duvet from the machine as soon as the cycle has finished.
- Gently reshape the duvet after washing.
- Air dry outside on a line or indoors over a clothes airer.
- Make sure it is completely dry before use or storage.
What to avoid
To protect the natural alpaca filling:
- Do not dry clean.
- Do not use standard laundry detergent.
- Do not use biological detergent.
- Do not use fabric conditioner.
- Do not use bleach.
- Do not tumble dry.
- Do not place on a radiator or use high heat.
- Do not leave the duvet sitting damp in the washing machine.
- Do not store while damp.
Our duvets are made from natural fibres, so we do not recommend dry cleaning. Dry cleaning can involve chemicals that may leave residues on your much-loved duvet.
Storing your alpaca duvet
If you are storing your alpaca duvet away for a season, make sure it is completely clean, dry and well aired first.
Store it in a breathable cotton storage bag, rather than sealing it in plastic for long periods. Keep it somewhere dry, away from damp, condensation or strong odours.
When you bring it back out, give it a gentle shake and allow it to air before putting it back on the bed.
Natural care for natural comfort
Your Alpaca Wool Duvet has been made using natural fibres that deserve gentle care.
With regular airing, a protective duvet cover, careful spot cleaning when needed and proper dry storage, your alpaca duvet can remain fresh, comfortable and naturally comforting for years to come.
