The Natural Bedding Guide
A Family Business with a Different Approach
A reflection from Dick and Pauline, Founders
Devon Duvets has always been a family business, but for us that has never just meant that our name is attached to it, we continue to be fully involved.
This means we are close to the decisions we make, the people we work with, the materials we choose and the customers we serve.
We have never wanted Devon Duvets to feel like a distant company selling anonymous products. We wanted to build something with care at its heart: care for the materials, care for the people who make our bedding, care for our customers and care for the values we began with.
When a business is family-run, choices feel personal.
We see the effect of the decisions we make. We know the team who make our bedding. We understand the materials that go into each product. We hear from the customers who sleep beneath our duvets, rest on our pillows and use our mattress toppers in their homes.
That closeness shapes the way we work.
Growing with the business
When Devon Duvets began, our children, Anna and Jake, were young.
They grew up alongside the business. They saw the early days, the long hours, the challenges, the excitement, the workshop growing and the products developing. In many ways, they have known Devon Duvets from the inside out for most of their lives.
Now they work with us and are very much part of the team.
As parents, working alongside your children is something very special. It makes us proud to see Anna and Jake bringing their own skills, ideas and commitment into the business we began all those years ago.
But the family feeling at Devon Duvets extends beyond us.
Our team is a huge part of who we are. Many of the people who make, finish, pack and send our bedding have been part of the Devon Duvets story for years. We work closely together, and there is a genuine sense of shared care in what we do.
Every duvet, pillow and mattress topper passes through skilled hands, but also through a team that understands the importance of getting things right for the customer who will eventually sleep beneath it.
Devon Duvets may have begun as a family idea, but it has grown through the work, loyalty and care of a much wider team. In many ways, they are part of the family too.
A different way of making decisions
A different approach means trying to run a business with care, not just efficiency.
Of course, every business has to be practical. We have to think about costs, orders, timings, stock, materials and all the daily realities of manufacturing in Britain. But we also try to ask wider questions.
Is this the right material?
Is this the right way to make it?
Is this fair to the customer?
Is this respectful to the maker?
Does this support the values we began with?
Will this product be useful, comfortable and long-lasting?
Those questions matter to us.
It would often be easier to do things differently: to buy finished products, to simplify the supply chain, to follow trends more quickly, or to move further away from making things ourselves.
But that is not why Devon Duvets began.
We believe there is still value in making bedding properly, with natural materials, skilled hands and honest knowledge behind it.
Staying close to our customers
Because we are close to the business, we are also close to our customers.
We listen to the questions people ask. We hear when someone is unsure which duvet weight to choose, whether a pillow will suit them, how to make a mattress more comfortable, or what might work best for a child, guest room or loved one.
That feedback is important.
It helps us understand how our bedding is used in real homes, by real people, with different needs. It also helps us to keep improving what we do.
We want customers to feel guided rather than sold to. Bedding is personal, and the right choice can make a real difference to comfort and rest. That is why we try to offer honest advice, not just a quick answer.
Kindness matters to us
Care is part of our business in more than one way.
It is in the way our products are made, but it is also in the way we try to treat people.
We have a kindness policy within our business because we believe the way people are treated matters — customers, makers, suppliers and the team around us.
For us, kindness is not about being sentimental. It is about respect. It is about listening properly. It is about trying to solve problems fairly. It is about remembering that behind every order, question, delay, review or conversation, there is a person.
We feel this is important in our family business.
It helps shape the culture of the workshop, the way we speak to customers and the standards we try to hold ourselves to.
Thinking beyond the next order
A family business often thinks differently because it carries its history with it.
We remember why we began. We know how much work has gone into building Devon Duvets. We understand that trust is built slowly, through years of doing what we say we do.
That makes us think beyond the next order.
We want to make products that last.
We want to support British wool and skilled making.
We want customers to feel confident in what they are buying.
We want our team to feel valued.
We want Devon Duvets to continue to stand for something real.
That is not always the easiest path, but it is the path that feels true to us.
The difference of staying human
As Devon Duvets has grown, we have tried to hold on to the human part of the business.
The conversations.
The care.
The knowledge.
The responsibility.
The belief that a business can be practical and still have values.
That is what a family business means to us.
Not just ownership.
Not just history.
Not just a name.
It means staying close to what we make, standing behind what we say, valuing the team who make it possible, and remembering that natural bedding is not only about materials.
It is about people, homes, rest and trust.
That is our different approach.
