The Natural Bedding Guide

Benefits of Wool Bedding

The carefully managed journey of our wool

Before our wool becomes a duvet, pillow or mattress topper, it has already been through a carefully managed journey.

At Devon Duvets, we do not buy anonymous processed filling. We buy raw British wool and oversee its journey through the important stages that turn fleece into beautiful, natural bedding.

This gives us traceability, control and confidence in the quality of the wool we use.

Starting with British wool

Our wool comes from British farms, the majority of which are in Devon and the South West of England, and can be traced back to source. This matters to us because we want to know where our wool has come from, how it has been handled and the standards behind it.

Traceability also allows us to make careful decisions about the wool we use.

We do not use lamb fleeces or winter shearing. We also do not use wool that is a by-product of the slaughterhouse. Instead, we use wool from sheep that have been shorn as part of their normal care and welfare. There are many grades of wool, some is used for carpets, some for insulation – we use only high grade wool, selected for loft and comfort.

Sheep need to be shorn and when the right fleece is selected, properly valued and prepared, it becomes a wonderful natural fibre for bedding.

Cleaning and preparing the wool

Once the raw wool has been sourced, it begins the next stage of its journey.

The wool is cleaned and prepared by specialist British wool processors. This is an important part of the process, because the wool needs to be suitable for use inside bedding while still retaining the natural qualities that make it so special.

Our wool is processed under the correct controls and permissions, including a sterilisation permit, so that it can be safely and properly prepared for use in our products.

We do not bleach or chemically treat the wool used inside our bedding. We believe wool already has remarkable natural qualities and our role is to preserve them, not interfere with them unnecessarily.

From loose fibre to soft wool layers

After cleaning, the wool is carded and needled into soft, lofty layers.

Carding helps open and align the fibres. Needling helps form the wool into a stable layer that can be used inside our duvets, pillows and mattress toppers.

This stage is important because it gives the wool structure without taking away the natural softness, breathability and comfort that make it so well suited to bedding.

The prepared wool is then ready to continue its journey to our Devon workshop.

Into our Devon workshop

Once the wool arrives with us, it is no longer just raw material. It has become the natural filling at the heart of our bedding.

In our workshop, each product is made individually by skilled hands. The wool is laid into cotton casing, secured, finished and checked according to the product being made.

A duvet needs loft and drape.

A pillow needs comfort and support.

A mattress topper needs softness, structure and the ability to settle naturally onto the bed.

Each product has a different role, but the wool inside each one has followed the same carefully managed journey.

Why the journey matters

For us, this journey matters because every stage affects the finished bedding.

  • The farm matters.
  • The fleece matters.
  • The way the wool is cleaned matters.
  • The way it is carded and needled matters.
  • The way it is made into bedding matters.

By overseeing the process from raw British wool to finished product, we can make bedding with greater care and confidence as we know where our wool has come from, how it has been prepared and ensure it is of the highest quality with no bleaches or chemical treatments.

When you sleep under a Devon Duvets wool duvet, rest on one of our wool pillows, or add one of our wool mattress toppers to your bed, you are not sleeping with anonymous fibre.

You are sleeping with wool that has a source, a story and a carefully managed journey behind it.

That is what we mean by natural rest, bedding made with care.
