Choosing the right pillow is one of the most personal parts of creating a comfortable bed.
Your duvet keeps you warm and your mattress supports your body, but your pillow sits closest to you all night. Your head, neck, shoulders, face and breathing space are all in close contact with your pillow for hours at a time.
That is why a pillow needs to do more than simply feel soft. It should support your sleeping position, help your neck rest comfortably, and create a fresh, breathable place to sleep.
Side, back and front sleepers often need different pillow heights. Sadly, necks are fussy little tyrants.
2
Your body shape matters
Your shoulder width, neck shape and mattress feel all affect how high or low your pillow should be.
3
Your materials matter
Because your pillow sits close to your face and breathing space, natural breathable materials make a real difference.
Why your pillow matters
A pillow should support, breathe and feel naturally comfortable
A good pillow helps your head and neck rest in a comfortable position. If your pillow is too high, your neck can be pushed upwards. If it is too low, your head may drop downwards.
If your pillow does not breathe well, it may feel warm, clammy or uncomfortable during the night.
The right pillow should feel supportive but not forced. It should suit the way you sleep and the shape of your body, especially your shoulders, neck and head.
Why natural materials are important
Because your pillow is so close to your face and breathing space, the materials matter too.
Our wool is not bleached or chemically treated, and our wool pillows are made without synthetic fibres, foams, glues or artificial bonding agents. This means you are resting on natural fibres that remain close to the way nature intended.
Start with how you sleep
Choose by sleeping position
Your sleeping position is usually the best place to begin. Once you know how you sleep most often, choosing the right pillow becomes much less like gambling with your spine.
If you sleep on your side
Side sleepers often need a fuller pillow because the pillow has to fill the space between the shoulder and the head.
You may prefer:
Original Adjustable Wool Pillow with more filling left inside
Quilted Adjustable Wool Pillow
3 Fold or 4 Fold Wool Folding Pillow
King size pillow if you like more width
If you sleep on your back
Back sleepers usually need gentle support without too much height. The pillow should support the natural curve of the neck without pushing the head too far forward.
You may prefer:
Original Adjustable Wool Pillow with some wool removed
Quilted Adjustable Wool Pillow adjusted to a medium height
2 Fold or 3 Fold Wool Folding Pillow
If you sleep on your front
Front sleepers often need a lower pillow because too much height can twist the neck. Some front sleepers prefer a very low pillow, while others prefer no pillow at all.
You may prefer:
low-adjusted Original Adjustable Wool Pillow
2 Fold Wool Folding Pillow
a pillow with some filling removed
If you change position
Many people do not sleep in one position all night. If you move between side, back and front sleeping, adjustability is usually your friend.
You may prefer:
Original Adjustable Wool Pillow
Quilted Adjustable Wool Pillow
3 Fold Wool Folding Pillow for flexible shaping and support
Understanding our pillow styles
Each pillow has a different feel and purpose
Some Devon Duvets pillows are adjustable, some are more structured, and some are designed to offer extra width for larger beds.
Most flexible option
Original Adjustable Wool Pillow
The Original Adjustable Wool Pillow is filled with hand-fluffed British wool inside a zipped cotton casing. The zip allows you to remove some of the wool if you prefer a lower pillow, or keep more inside if you want a fuller feel.
This makes it a helpful choice if you are unsure what pillow height you need.
Choose this pillow if:
you want to adjust the height yourself
you are unsure whether you need a low, medium or fuller pillow
you sleep in more than one position
you like a softer, more traditional pillow feel
you want the flexibility to change the pillow over time
Adjustable and cushioned
Quilted Adjustable Wool Pillow
The Quilted Adjustable Wool Pillow gives you adjustability with a more cushioned outer feel.
It has loose wool inside, like the Original Adjustable Wool Pillow, but the cotton casing is quilted with a layer of wool. This gives the surface of the pillow a softer, padded feel while still allowing you to remove or add filling to suit your preferred height.
Choose this pillow if:
you want an adjustable pillow
you like a more cushioned outer surface
you prefer a slightly more luxurious feel
you want support with softness
you like the idea of wool inside the pillow and within the quilted casing
Folding Wool Pillows
Structured, adaptable and useful for neck support
Our Folding Wool Pillows are made differently from our loose-filled adjustable pillows. Instead of loose wool filling inside a zipped casing, they are created in foldable sections, giving them a more structured and adaptable feel.
One of the most useful features of our 3 Fold and 4 Fold pillows is that you can roll or fold one section to create extra support beneath the neck.
This can be especially helpful if you like a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck while still giving comfort under the head.
Choosing between 2 Fold, 3 Fold and 4 Fold
The more folds, the more height and structure. Astonishingly, numbers have betrayed us by being useful.
Lowest folding pillow
2 Fold Wool Pillow
This is the lowest folding pillow and gives a gentle, flatter feel.
Choose this if:
you prefer a lower pillow
you sleep on your front or back
you do not like too much height
you want gentle natural support
you prefer a more minimal pillow feel
Medium height
3 Fold Wool Pillow
This is a good middle option and suits many back and side sleepers. It gives more height than the 2 Fold, while still feeling adaptable.
The 3 Fold can also be shaped so that one section creates natural neck support while the rest of the pillow supports the head.
Choose this if:
you want a medium-height pillow
you sleep on your side or back
you like a more structured feel
you want the option to roll or fold part of the pillow for neck support
you want a pillow that can adapt to different sleeping positions
Fullest folding pillow
4 Fold Wool Pillow
This is the fullest folding pillow and gives the most height and structure.
The 4 Fold is especially useful for those who like a higher pillow or want more shaping options. One section can be rolled or folded to create a more pronounced neck support.
Choose this if:
you prefer a higher pillow
you are mainly a side sleeper
you have broader shoulders
you find lower pillows do not give enough support
you like a more substantial feel
you want the option to create a supportive neck roll
King Size Pillows
For extra width, balance and room to move
A king size pillow gives extra width and can look more balanced on a larger bed. It may also suit customers who like more space to move their head during the night.
All of our pillows are available in King size.
Choose a king size pillow if:
you have a king size or super king bed
you prefer a wider pillow
you like a more generous look on the bed
you move around more during sleep
you want a pillow with more presence
Which pillow is right for me?
A simple pillow decision guide
Start with what you need most. Height, adjustability, cushioning, neck support or width. The pillow will not choose itself, the lazy thing.
I am not sure what height I need
Choose the Original Adjustable Wool Pillow.
It gives you the most flexibility because you can remove wool until the pillow feels right.
I want adjustability with extra cushioning
Choose the Quilted Adjustable Wool Pillow.
It gives you the benefit of adjustable filling with a softer quilted surface.
I prefer a lower pillow
Choose the 2 Fold Wool Pillow.
You can also choose an adjustable pillow and remove some of the wool.
I want a medium-height pillow
Choose the 3 Fold Wool Pillow.
You can also choose an adjustable pillow and alter it to a medium height.
I prefer a fuller, higher pillow
Choose the 4 Fold Wool Pillow.
You can also choose an adjustable pillow with more wool left inside.
I want extra neck support
Choose a 3 Fold or 4 Fold Wool Folding Pillow.
These can be rolled or folded to create extra support beneath the neck.
I want a wider pillow
Choose one of our King size pillows.
A king size pillow can be a good choice for larger beds or for those who prefer more width and room to move.
I sleep in several positions
Choose an adjustable pillow.
The Original Adjustable or Quilted Adjustable pillow lets you change the height and feel over time.
I want a more structured pillow
Choose a Folding Wool Pillow.
The folded design gives more shaping options than a loose-filled pillow.
Why choose a wool pillow?
A natural choice for where you rest your head
Wool is breathable, moisture managing and temperature regulating. This helps create a fresher and more comfortable sleeping environment around the head and face.
Wool is also naturally resistant to dust mites, which can be helpful for those who are sensitive to dust mite allergens.
Wool pillows offer a different feel from synthetic or foam pillows. Rather than trapping warmth in the same way, wool helps air and moisture move more naturally, which can reduce that warm or clammy feeling some people experience with less breathable fillings.
For customers who are trying to create a more natural sleep space, a wool pillow is a simple but meaningful place to begin.
