The Natural Bedding Guide

Why We Choose British Wool

British wool is at the heart of Devon Duvets.

When we first began handcrafting wool duvets almost 20 years ago, British wool bedding was not widely known in the UK. Wool has been used by people for centuries and is familiar to people in jumpers, carpets and traditional blankets, but the idea of a beautifully handcrafted British wool duvet was unknown.

We believed then, as we do now, that British wool deserved a place in the modern bedroom.

It is a natural fibre with quality, character and purpose. It comes from British farms, supports British farmers, and allows us to create bedding with a genuine story behind it.

Today, British wool is increasingly sought after for natural bedding. We hope that, in our own way, Devon Duvets has played a part in that revival.

A fibre with provenance

One of the main reasons we choose British wool is because we believe provenance matters.

When you sleep under a duvet, rest on a topper or place your head on a pillow, you should be able to know what is inside it and where that material has come from.

British wool allows us to work with a fibre that has a clear connection to place. It is grown by sheep on British farms, then carefully prepared and made into bedding here in the UK.

For us, that connection is important.

It means our bedding begins with farmers, flocks and landscapes. It is not anonymous. It has a journey, and we believe that journey should be valued.

Supporting British farmers

British farming is part of our story.

Sheep farming is hard work, carried out in all weathers and often across challenging landscapes. Shearing is an important part of caring for sheep, helping keep them comfortable and healthy through the changing seasons.

By choosing British wool, we are supporting the farmers who care for those flocks and helping to give real value to the fibre they produce.

For many years, wool has not always been valued as highly as it should be. We believe that is a great shame. British wool is a beautiful, useful and renewable natural material, and it deserves to be made into products that last, comfort and serve a real purpose. When we make bedding from British wool, we are helping turn that fleece into something meaningful.

Quality we can trust

We choose British wool because of its quality.

For bedding, we need wool that can be prepared, layered and stitched into products that feel comfortable, resilient and practical for everyday use. We need a fibre that can hold its shape, offer natural loft and create a comfortable sleeping environment.

British wool gives us all of that.

It has strength, spring and character. It allows us to make duvets, mattress toppers and pillows that feel natural and substantial, using a fibre that is beautifully suited to handcrafted bedding. Because we have worked with wool for many years, we understand how it behaves. We know how to layer it, how to handle it and how to make the most of its natural qualities.

That experience matters.

Pioneering British wool bedding

When Devon Duvets began, handcrafted British wool duvets were not a familiar choice for most UK customers.

We were one of the early companies showing that wool could be more than a traditional textile or a rural by-product. It could be used to make beautiful, natural, breathable bedding for modern homes.

At the time, many people were used to synthetic, feather or down duvets. Wool duvets needed explanation. Customers wanted to understand how they felt, how they worked, how they were cared for and why they were different.

Over the years, we have helped tell that story.

We have talked to customers, written guides, answered questions, made videos, attended shows and explained why wool belongs in bedding. Slowly, British wool has become more recognised and appreciated as a natural choice for sleep.

We are proud to have been part of that journey.

Working with British Wool on traceability

Traceability has always mattered to us.

We wanted customers to have confidence that the wool inside their Devon Duvets product was genuinely British and responsibly sourced. That is why we worked with British Wool to help develop the traceable British wool scheme.

Devon Duvets was one of the first companies to be part of this scheme, and the first bedding company to use traceable British wool.

That was important to us because it gave customers clearer reassurance about the wool inside their bedding. It also helped show that wool traceability should not be reserved for luxury fashion or specialist textiles. It matters in bedding too - after all, bedding is something we live with every night.

Keeping the supply chain closer to home

Choosing British wool allows us to keep more of our supply chain closer to home.

That matters for several reasons. It helps support British farming and British wool processing. It gives us greater understanding of the material we are using. It also helps us maintain the integrity of the products we make.

We are not interested in using wool simply because it sounds natural. We want to know where it comes from and manage how it is prepared to make it right for our bedding.

A closer supply chain helps us do that.

It also reflects the way we make. Our bedding is individually handcrafted in our Devon workshops, so it feels right that the wool we use has a clear connection to the country in which we work.

British wool deserves to be valued

For us, choosing British wool is also about respect.

  • Respect for the fibre.
  • Respect for the farmers.
  • Respect for the animals.
  • Respect for the skill involved in turning raw wool into beautiful bedding.

Wool is renewable, natural and deeply practical. It is grown each year as part of the life of the sheep, and shearing is part of good flock care. Yet despite all this, wool has often been undervalued.

We believe British wool should be celebrated.

It should be used in products that show what it can do. It should be part of homes, bedrooms and everyday life. It should be seen not as old-fashioned, but as one of the most sensible natural fibres we have.

Why it matters to our customers

When you choose a Devon Duvets British wool product, you are choosing more than a duvet, mattress topper or pillow.

You are choosing a product made from a natural fibre with a clear story. You are supporting British farmers and British wool. You are choosing bedding that has been handcrafted with care, using a material we know, trust and believe in.

You are also choosing a product that reflects a different way of buying: one that values provenance, quality and thoughtful making.

For many customers, that matters.

They want to know that what they bring into their home has been made with care and integrity. They want natural materials. They want to buy better. They want products with meaning, not just convenience.

British wool allows us to offer that.

A fibre that belongs in the bedroom

Nearly 20 years after we began, we still choose British wool because it remains the fibre that best represents Devon Duvets.

It is natural, honest and full of character and qualities that help us to sleep better. It connects us to British farming, to skilled making and to the land around us and allows us to create bedding with substance and integrity.

British wool was there at the beginning of Devon Duvets and it is still at the centre of what we do.

And we are proud to have helped bring it into the bedroom.
