The Natural Bedding Guide
Why Our Bedding is Handcrafted Individually
At Devon Duvets, the way we make our bedding is just as important as the natural materials we choose.
Each wool duvet, pillow and mattress topper is individually handcrafted in our Devon workshop. This means every product is made with care, attention and skill, rather than being cut from a large roll of pre-made wadding.
That makes all the difference.
Wool is a natural fibre, it has life, loft, softness and movement. To make a wool duvet properly, the wool and cotton need to work together. The cotton should not pull against the wool and the wool should not feel trapped or flattened inside the outer cotton casing.
This is where individual handcrafting is important.
When we make a duvet, our seamstresses understand how the wool needs to lie inside the cotton casing. There needs to be just the right amount of ease and allowance, so the wool can settle naturally and the duvet can keep its loft and drape.
Too much tension, and the duvet can feel flat or restricted.
Too much stitching, and the wool can become compressed.
Too little care, and the cotton and wool do not work together as they should.
That is why we use minimal stitching through the body of our duvets — enough to hold the wool securely in place, but not so much that the duvet becomes flat, rigid or “biscuit-like”.
A Devon Duvets wool duvet feels soft, breathable and naturally comforting. It has loft, but also drape. It settles over the body rather than sit stiffly on top of it.
This is very different from duvets that are made in large-scale production, where wool may be sandwiched between two layers of fabric on huge rolls and then cut into finished sizes. That method can produce a very different kind of duvet: flatter, more compressed and less able to move naturally with the fabric around it.
Our mattress toppers are made with the same understanding.
A wool topper needs structure, but it also needs softness and give. It should relax onto the bed and create a comfortable layer of wool beneath the body. It should not feel tight, board-like or overworked.
By making each topper individually, our seamstresses can allow the wool and cotton to work together, creating a natural layer of comfort that feels supportive, breathable and beautifully settled on the mattress.
This kind of making cannot be rushed.
It comes from experience.
It comes from handling the wool.
It comes from understanding the fabric.
It comes from knowing how much stitching is enough; and when to stop.
For us, handcrafting is not simply about tradition. It is about making better bedding.
Bedding with loft.
Bedding with drape.
Bedding that breathes.
Bedding where the natural fibres are allowed to do what they do best.
From the way we source our wool to the way each product is finished in our Devon workshop, every stage is part of the same belief: natural bedding should be made with care, skill and respect for the materials.
That is what makes a Devon Duvets product feel different.
