Why We Don’t Bleach or Chemically Treat Our Wool
What we leave out matters
At Devon Duvets, we believe natural bedding should begin with respect; for the sheep, the farmer, the fibre and for the person who will eventually sleep beneath or on it.
That is why we do not bleach or chemically treat the wool used inside our duvets, pillows and mattress toppers.
For us, this is not a small detail; it is one of the most important choices we make.
Wool is already a remarkable natural fibre. It is breathable, resistant to dust mites, insulating, temperature-regulating and able to absorb and release moisture. These qualities are not added in a factory; they are part of wool’s own natural structure.
So our approach is simple: preserve what nature has already created.
We do not want to make wool brighter, whiter, flatter, more uniform or more artificial than it needs to be. We do not want to coat it or change it in ways that interfere with the very qualities that make wool so well suited to bedding.
We want wool to remain wool.
Natural white wool, chosen carefully
We use carefully selected British wool from naturally white fleeces, so there is no need for bleaching.
This matters because bleaching is often used to make natural fibres look more visually uniform. But for bedding, we believe the quality, provenance and natural performance of the wool are far more important than making it appear artificially perfect.
Wool is a fibre that comes from the living world. It has grown on the back of a sheep, shaped by weather, pasture, season and care.
We believe that should be respected, not changed.
Cleaned with care, not unnecessarily treated
Of course, wool used in bedding must be properly cleaned and prepared.
Our wool is washed and processed by specialist British wool processors under the correct controls and permissions, including a sterilisation permit, so that it is suitable for use inside our bedding.
But there is a difference between carefully cleaning wool and unnecessarily treating it.
We believe wool should be prepared properly, but not altered beyond what is needed.
That is why we do not bleach it.
We do not chemically treat it.
We do not use chemical coatings to make it behave like something it is not.
Instead, we allow wool to keep the natural qualities that make it so valuable for rest.
Why treatments can change the fibre
Some wool bedding is treated so that it can be washed at high temperatures or tumble dried.
That may sound convenient, but it usually involves altering or coating the wool fibres so they behave differently. In our view, this can move wool further away from the qualities that make it special in the first place.
Wool naturally works with the body. It breathes. It helps regulate temperature. It manages moisture. It is resistant to dust mites. It has softness, loft and life.
When wool is heavily treated, coated or over-processed, the fibre can be changed.
For us, the question has always been: why interfere with something that already works so beautifully?
What we choose instead
We choose traceable British wool.
We choose natural white fleeces of the right quality for our bedding.
We choose careful washing and preparation.
We choose British processors and mills.
We choose not to bleach our wool.
We choose not to chemically treat it.
We choose to preserve the fibre as nature intended.
This is part of our wider commitment to responsible making.
We also carefully source our cotton. For our duvets and pillows, our cotton is woven especially for us to achieve the quality and feel we require, using cotton supporting the Better Cotton Initiative and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. For our wool mattress toppers, our brushed cotton is woven especially for us in an OEKO-TEX certified mill.
Every material has been considered because bedding is close to the body for many hours every night.
A quiet confidence
We know that words like natural, sustainable and chemical-free are used widely now.
For us, this is not about following a trend or making claims that sound good. It is about doing the work behind the words.
We know where our wool comes from.
We know how it is prepared.
We know what we choose to leave out.
We know why those choices matter.
Natural bedding should not need to be overcomplicated.
It should be made from good materials, sourced responsibly, prepared carefully and made with skill.
That is why we do not bleach or chemically treat our wool.
Because the most powerful thing we can do is often the simplest: choose well, interfere less, and let a remarkable natural fibre do what it does best.
