How to Care for Your Wool Pillow
Your pillow works hard every night. It supports your head and neck, rests close to your face, hair and skin, and forms part of your immediate breathing space while you sleep.
That is why keeping your pillow fresh matters.
Devon Duvets wool pillows are made with natural, traceable British wool. The wool is not bleached or chemically treated and is naturally breathable, moisture managing and resistant to dust mites.
The wool itself does not need frequent washing. In fact, the less you wash loose wool filling, the better it will perform.
Air regularly. Identify your pillow type. Wash only the correct part.

Wash the correct part

Air your pillow regularly
The easiest way to keep wool feeling fresh
Whenever you change your bedlinen, give your pillow some time to breathe.
On a dry day, air it outside for a few hours. When the weather is damp, place it indoors over a clothes airer, over the back of a chair or near an open window.
Airflow helps moisture move away and allows the wool to refresh naturally.
With an adjustable pillow, the loose filling can also be removed and aired separately before being returned to the casing.
Outside
Place the pillow somewhere clean and dry for several hours.
Over an airer
Allow air to circulate around as much of the pillow as possible.
Over a chair
Remove the pillowcase and drape the pillow in a dry room.
Beside a window
Use an open window for airflow when outdoor airing is not practical.

Find the correct care method before washing
Not all Devon Duvets wool pillows are constructed in the same way. First identify whether the filling is removable and whether the casing itself contains wool.
Cotton casing without wool quilting

Correct care
Remove and air the wool. Wash only the empty cotton casing at up to
40°C on a gentle cycle using non-biological detergent.
Wool-quilted outer casing

Correct care
Remove and air the loose wool. Wash only the quilted casing on a
30°C wool cycle using specialist wool detergent.
Complete Folding Wool Pillow
Includes:

Correct care
Unfold completely and wash the whole pillow on a 30°C wool cycle
using specialist wool detergent.
Heart Shaped Comfort Cushion
The wool inside the cushion cannot be removed, so the entire cushion is washed as one complete item.
Correct care
Wash whole on a 30°C wool cycle with wool detergent. Reshape the
body and corners carefully before air drying.
Original Adjustable Wool Pillow
Remove the wool and wash only the cotton casing
The Original Adjustable Wool Pillow contains loose wool filling inside a zipped cotton casing.
The zip allows the wool to be removed for airing and enables the empty cotton casing to be washed separately.
- remove all wool filling through the zip
- spread the wool out and allow it to air
- do not wash the loose wool filling
- wash the empty cotton casing only
- use a gentle cycle at up to 40°C
- use non-biological detergent
- reshape and air dry the casing thoroughly
- return the aired wool only when the casing is completely dry
The important distinction
Wash the casing, not the filling
The cotton casing and natural wool filling perform different jobs and are cared for separately.
- the cotton casing may be gently washed
- the loose wool should be aired rather than washed
- the casing must be fully dry before refilling
- the wool can be gently teased apart before it is returned
Quilted Adjustable Wool Pillow
Treat the quilted casing as a wool product
The Quilted Adjustable Wool Pillow contains removable loose filling, but its outer cotton casing is also quilted with wool.
This means the loose wool should still be removed and aired separately, while the quilted casing must be washed using wool-safe settings and detergent.
- remove the loose filling through the zip
- air the filling separately and do not wash it
- wash only the quilted casing
- use a 30°C wool cycle
- use specialist wool detergent
- spin out excess water and remove promptly
- reshape the casing while damp
- air dry completely
- do not tumble dry or dry clean
Folding Wool Pillows
Unfold and wash the complete pillow
Folding Wool Pillows are constructed differently from our adjustable pillows. Their wool filling is not loose or removable.
The complete pillow is washed as one piece. Unfolding it first allows the pillow to wash and dry more evenly than it would if left folded.
- unfold the pillow completely
- wash the whole pillow
- use a 30°C wool cycle
- use specialist wool detergent
- spin out excess water and remove promptly
- reshape each section gently
- air dry thoroughly while unfolded
- do not tumble dry
- do not fold again until completely dry
Unfold
Open every section fully before placing the pillow in the machine.
Wash gently
Use a true 30°C wool cycle and specialist wool detergent.
Reshape
Smooth and reposition each section as soon as washing is complete.
Dry unfolded
Allow air to circulate around the entire pillow until fully dry.
Heart Shaped Comfort Cushion
Wash whole and reshape the corners carefully
The wool inside the Heart Shaped Comfort Cushion is not removable, so the entire cushion should be washed.
- wash the whole cushion
- use a 30°C wool cycle
- use specialist wool detergent
- spin out excess water and remove promptly
- reshape the body and corners gently
- air dry completely
- do not tumble dry
- do not dry clean
Pay particular attention to the curved edges and corners when reshaping so the cushion returns to its intended form.

What not to do
Keep heat, harsh detergent and damp storage away from wool
Wool responds best to gentle washing, the correct detergent and thorough natural drying. Using the wrong method may affect the pillow’s shape, freshness and natural fibre structure.
Do not wash loose wool
Remove and air loose filling rather than placing it in the machine.
Do not use ordinary detergent on wool
Wool-filled and wool-quilted items require specialist wool detergent.
Do not use biological detergent
Biological detergent should not be used on wool-filled or wool-quilted products.
Do not tumble dry
Heat and repeated movement may shrink, felt or distort the wool.
Do not dry clean
Dry-cleaning chemicals are not recommended for our natural wool pillows.
Do not leave it in the machine
Remove washed casings and complete pillows promptly after spinning.
Do not store it damp
Every layer and section must be thoroughly dry before storage.
Do not use it before it is dry
Damp wool may lose freshness and will not perform as intended.
Drying your pillow
Natural drying cannot be rushed
Wool-filled and wool-quilted products must be air dried thoroughly.
Spread or unfold each item so air can circulate around it. Turn and reposition it periodically, particularly around seams, folds and thicker sections.

- spread or unfold it across a clean airer
- allow air to reach both sides
- turn or reposition it during drying
- check seams, corners and central areas carefully
- do not refill or fold until completely dry

Before washing or drying your pillow
Can I wash loose wool filling?
No. Loose wool filling from an adjustable pillow should be removed and aired separately. Wash only the appropriate empty casing.
Why can one casing be washed at 40°C?
The Original Adjustable Pillow casing is cotton without wool quilting. Once the wool is removed, the empty casing can be washed at up to 40°C on a gentle cycle using non-biological detergent.
Why does the quilted casing need a wool cycle?
The casing itself contains wool quilting. It must therefore be treated as a wool product and washed at 30°C using a wool cycle and wool-specific detergent.
Can I wash a Folding Wool Pillow whole?
Yes. Unfold it completely first, then wash the whole pillow on a 30°C wool cycle using wool detergent. Reshape and air dry it while unfolded.
Can I tumble dry on a cool setting?
No. Wool-filled and wool-quilted items should never be tumble dried, even on a cooler setting.
How do I know when the pillow is dry?
Check the centre, seams, corners, quilted areas and every folding section. They should feel completely dry without any cool or damp patches.
