With campervan, caravan and motorhome owners gearing up to get on the road again, there are lots of preparations to make, to ensure everything is ready for some exciting new adventures in 2024.

Of course, there’s all the usual tasks, such as servicing your vehicle, stocking up on essentials, and checking gas bottles - but you also want to make sure that your ‘home from home’ is comfy and cosy. Here’s where a mattress topper can make a big difference to your sleep experience when you’re travelling. A good night’s sleep means you enjoy your holiday even more, leaving you feel rested and ready for the day ahead.

At Devon Duvets, we’ve been making luxurious British wool mattress toppers for over 15 years and because each one is individually handcrafted by professional seamstresses in our Devon workshops, we can also make bespoke sizes. We can even make them with ‘cut outs' and angles to fit round awkward bulkheads, wheel arches or cupboards.

Here’s what makes our mattress toppers a cut above the rest:

Beautifully British

We are a family-run, family-owned business that is committed to creating 100% British made products that aim to help you sleep better. Responsible sourcing is a critical part of who we are and what we do, and this extends to every part of our business and our supply chain. This means that not only does the Devon Duvet team take great pride in their work but every product we make is crafted with fillings and fabrics specially selected for their high quality, sustainability and for being eco-friendly. Even our packaging is made for us, here in Devon, and is recyclable.

Made with fully traceable 100% British wool

We only use British wool, and we gather it from flocks across Devon and the Southwest. The wool is shorn in late Spring and Summer so that the sheep have time to regrow it for the next winter. Our wool is certified by British Wool as being fully traceable from farm to topper and our farmers receive a higher than market price for their fleeces. Our wool is then washed and needled at traditional British mills, without the use of chemicals, to ensure our wool stays as natural as possible and retains all its wonderful properties.

Encased in the softest brushed cotton

By the time the wool arrives with us from the mill, it has been needled into soft layers, which we encase in 100% brushed cotton, woven to our strict specifications. The bottom casing is hand cut, using traditional dressmaking scissors, and laid out. Wool layers are then hand cut to size and placed on top, with the top part of the casing then cut and placed. The wool layers are stitched into the casing to hold the layers in place. Unlike most toppers, we do not box stitch, as we want to ensure the wool keeps as much ‘loft’ as possible. The result is a topper that will add approximately 5cm of comfort to your mattress.

A topper that’s individually handcrafted for you

We will make your topper specifically for you, and because our seamstresses are in the same building as the rest of the Devon Duvets team, we’re right on hand to chat with them about any special requirements or instructions and to follow progress. We don’t prefabricate any part of our toppers, either in the UK or overseas – each one is individually handcrafted from start to finish in our workshops on the edge of Dartmoor.

What are the benefits of a bespoke wool topper?

In addition to adding a layer of comfort to your mattress, wool is a wonderful fibre that’s breathable and moisture wicking, making it temperature regulating. It’s also naturally resistant to dust mites and the build-up of micro bacteria, so it’s hypoallergenic and hygienic. All you need do to keep your topper nice and fresh is to air it regularly – preferably outside when the weather is dry.

How can I store my wool topper?

Our toppers can be rolled up when not in use but do ensure you take it out of your van or caravan at the end of your trip and store it somewhere cool (not cold) and dry, ensuring it is not kept anywhere that’s damp. Just remember to air it before putting it away and againwhen you take it out to use for your next trip.

How do I order one of your British wool bespoke mattress toppers?

All you need do is get in touch with the team, either by calling 01752 345399 or via email, providing detailed measurements in centimetres. If there are any ‘cut outs’ or angles, then we would ask you to email us a drawing, showing where these need to be and their measurements.  Once we’ve received all your information, we will discuss your requirements with our seamstresses and come back to you with a price and a lead time. Lead times are usually about 10 days but could be a bit longer if we are experiencing a high volume of orders. We would always advise you at the time of placing the order. We offer a free delivery service, via DPD, to mainland UK addresses for orders over the value of £50.
