Wake Up Happy

It has been proven scientifically that wool has been found to induce a longer and deeper sleep with those who sleep with wool bedding waking less frequently during the night.

Studies show that sleeping under wool increases the duration of the most beneficial phase of sleep known as REM (Rapid Eye Movement). This stage of sleep is thought to be the most important for memory consolidation and most people associate it with dreaming. REM is a quite active and light stage compared to other areas of sleep and therefore it is easy to be often woken for a few seconds during the night, causing excessive sleepiness and a feeling of poor quality sleep in the morning. It follows that if we can improve this area of our sleep by sleeping under wool, this will contribute towards our good health and wellbeing.

The reason why wool can improve sleep this way is its ability to support the body in maintaining an even sleeping temperature. Natural wool fibres have the ability to carry excess heat away from the skin but also retain warmth when it is cold. Sheep have few sweat glands and it is this natural ability of wool that keeps them cool when needed and also warm when it is cold; making wool a wonderful material to use in duvets, mattress toppers and pillows.

It is often underestimated how important sleep is to our quality of life but a good night's sleep makes us feel happy and contributes positively to our lives.

'Have a great night's sleep with Devon Duvets'

It is often underestimated how important sleep is to our quality of life but a good night's sleep makes us feel happy and contributes positively to our lives.

It has been proven scientifically that natural materials, especially wool has been found to induce a longer and deeper sleep, with those sleeping on or under wool bedding waking less frequently during the night. This is particularly important during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of sleep.

Why is the REM sleep cycle important for a good night's sleep?

Studies show that sleeping under wool increases the duration of the most beneficial phase of sleep known as the Rapid Eye Movement (or REM) cycle. This stage of sleep is thought to be the most important for memory consolidation and most people associate it with dreaming. REM is a quite active and light stage compared to other areas of sleep and therefore it is easy to be often woken during the night for a few seconds. Wakefulness is often caused by an uneven sleeping temperature, i.e. you wake up feeling too hot or too cold,  which can result in poor quality sleep and making you feel tired in the morning. It follows that if we can improve this area of our sleep by sleeping under wool, this will contribute towards our good health and wellbeing.

Why does wool help achieve a more restful sleep?

The reason why wool can improve sleep this way is its ability to support the body in maintaining an even sleeping temperature. Natural wool can carry excess heat away from the skin but also retain warmth when it is cold. Another benefit of wool is that it has moisture wicking properties, drawing moisture away from your body whilst you sleep and releasing it into the surrounding air. This has two benefits; firstly it helps to cool you down when you start to get hot but it also prevents the humid, damp conditions in your duvet that dust mites love. So wool is also naturally resistant to dust mites and therefore a wool duvet is an excellent option for those who experience asthma at night as a result of dust mite allergens.

We only ever use certified traceable 100% British wool, shorn from live sheep in late spring or summer, when they need to lose their heavy winter fleeces, and we do not treat our wool with any chemicals. That makes it natural and sustainable, as well as making it healthier for you, and our planet. Each wool duvet is indiviually handcrafted, here in Devon, and by our experienced seamstresses.
