Rick and his partner are motorhome enthusiasts and, now that they are retired, travel regularly in their motorhome all over the UK and mainland Europe. However, they are finding the mattress of the bed in the motorhome is too thin and hard, and this is affecting the quality of their sleep. Rick contacted us to see if we could make a bespoke wool mattress topper to fit the bed and add a layer of comfort.

Michelle contacted us because she has a memory foam mattress but is finding that this makes her very hot during the warmer months and this is disrupting her sleep. Memory foam is synthetic so can trap heat around your body, and this is what is making Michelle feel hot. She was thinking of saving up for a new mattress, made with natural fibres, but then she read about the temperature regulating properties of wool toppers.

Our guide to choosing the perfect duvet tog ratings with wool:
A tog rating is a measure of thermal insulation. Originally created for the clothing market, all duvets come with their own scale of warmth level called a ‘tog rating’. This specifies warmth, not thickness. With duvets, the higher the duvet tog rating, the warmer the duvet. Conversely, the lower the tog rating, the cooler the duvet. Most duvets have a fixed tog rating which reflects their insulation factor, and means that they are generally not able to temperature regulate, i.e. they are unable release heat if you need to cool down.

As the lyrics in Bob Dylan’s song states “Times, they are a changing” and throughout time, our sleep patterns have also changed. Historical research shows that there is a huge amount of evidence that people in Western societies used to sleep in two phases (biphasic); known as ‘first sleep’ and ‘second sleep’.
